How to engineer the perfect pancake stack | pancake day
It’s that time of year again when it’s totally acceptable to skip dinner and eat a full pot of Nutella. Pancake Day! Although the real question is lemon and sugar or chocolate spread, we thought we would investigate how to engineer the perfect pancake stack this Pancake Day.
We called on a team of top engineers to explain the crucial process:
STEP ONE – Lay good foundations
A large porcelain plate should be in situ ready for the said masterpiece to rest upon - ensure no paper plates are in sight! It needs to be stable and level.
STEP TWO – Ensure the pancake is structurally sound
To ensure maximum stackability, you must optimise the pancake’s structural characteristics, even if that means compromising on taste and texture. You need it to resemble a flapjack with no fluffiness in sight!
STEP THREE – Safeguard the stabilisation of the pancake stack
Unlike the skyscrapers of today, our pancake stack will have absolutely no mechanical bond between each layer, so we have to rely on compressive stress to give it the strength to resist wind and water (which hopefully when built in the comfort of your own home, it won’t have to endure). We recommend 10 or more pancakes, to begin with.
To ensure our stack remains fully stable, we must ensure that our individual pancakes are as flat as possible and that our stack remains perfectly plumb at all stages of construction.
STEP FOUR - Find the right construction engineer
Like all major projects, success often lies in the grand finale, so you need to ensure that you have a knowledgeable, experienced and dedicated construction engineer to complete the final stack. The proof is in the pudding pancake!
