We are seeking a Principal Engineer Mechanical to join our team at the Almelo, Netherlands site. In this leadership role, you will manage a team of (Senior) Mechanical Engineers, overseeing the delivery of Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) as agreed upon with Design Managers in a matrix organization. You will ensure that designs meet Urenco’s best practices and global industry standards within the mechanical discipline. Your guidance and oversight will help deliver consistent, aligned, and optimal plant designs, while ensuring your team is adequately trained to act as key design engineers in Urenco’s Centre of Excellence for Plant Design.

What You’ll Do:
- Team Management: Lead and manage a design engineering team in the mechanical expertise area, consisting of 10-14 direct reports.
- Performance Promotion: Foster and stimulate team performance in alignment with Urenco’s values, culture, and behaviors.
- Design Consistency & Alignment: Ensure consistency, completeness, and alignment in plant designs by applying Urenco’s standards and meeting customer requirements.
- Safety Culture: Actively promote a proactive safety culture and perform analysis to foster learning from experience.
- Resource Allocation: Allocate design resources in collaboration with the Head of Design Engineering and Design Managers.
- Training & Education: Define and execute training programs to ensure that (Senior) Engineers act as Suitable Qualified and Experienced Persons (SQEP).
- Business Development: Anticipate business developments and specific Engineering & Design Activities (E&DA) demands.
- Support E&DA Objectives: Support the Design Technology Manager in achieving E&DA objectives and managing the budget.
- Plant/Facility Designs: Define and implement plant/facility designs based on Urenco’s best practices and state-of-the-art technology solutions, ensuring competitiveness in the industry.
What You Need to Thrive in This Role:
- Bachelor’s Degree in (Advanced, Nuclear) Process Technology, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a specialism in Nuclear Science.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License obtained through accredited examination in associated areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional training and/or accreditation in Physics, Chemistry, Advanced Process Technology, and Industrial/Nuclear Safety.
Experience and Skills:
- Leadership Experience: Proven experience in managing design engineering teams to deliver medium/large plant designs.
- Complex Design Projects: Demonstrable leadership role in managing complex design and engineering projects.
- Expert Team Leadership: Proven ability to lead a team of highly trained experts.
- Front-End Engineering Designs: Experience in delivering Front-End Engineering Designs (FEED).
- Safety Analysis: Seniority in defining and substantiating design solutions to support integrated safety analysis and safety case reports.
- Design Intent: Ability to define and maintain the design intent of Urenco’s assets.
- Design Management: Experience in implementing Urenco’s design management processes and procedures.
- Plant Design Expertise: In-depth knowledge of all aspects of plant design, including interfaces and boundary limits in the mechanical expertise area.
- Problem-Solving Capability: Strong ability to solve complex issues requiring scientific knowledge to meet customer, licensing, and legislative requirements.
