Engineer Criticality & Radiation Safety
Help us to make a world of difference
Urenco is a global leader in producing low-carbon energy, working at the forefront of the transition to a sustainable, net-zero future.
We’re currently seeking a Engineer in Criticality & Radiation Safety to join us at our Gronau site. In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining group standards and a knowledge base in nuclear criticality and radiation dosimetry safety across Urenco’s facilities. You will advise the Group Design Authority Manager on safety within this critical area and provide governance and oversight during design development, project execution, operations, and decommissioning phases. In addition, you will coordinate criticality and dosimetry assessments across the group, fostering alignment, standardisation, and structured learning. Your work will ensure that regulatory requirements are reviewed and integrated into new or updated standards and specifications, and you’ll be a source of expert advice on troubleshooting and optimisation when needed.
At Urenco, we’re dedicated to supporting your growth and potential. If you meet some, but not all, of our criteria, we encourage you to apply. We value passion and drive and offer industry-leading training and development opportunities, alongside mentorship from some of the brightest minds in the field.
What You’ll Do
- Develop Expertise in Nuclear Safety: Build and maintain a deep understanding of facility process design and the licensing basis, with a focus on nuclear safety, particularly in criticality and irradiation.
- Establish Methodologies and Tools: Collaborate with site Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to establish methodologies and select computational tools for performing criticality and radiation dosimetry modelling, analysis, and calculations.
- Support Facility and Engineering Projects: Conduct analyses and calculations and create designs to support various facility and engineering programs and projects.
- Perform Technical Reviews: Carry out thorough technical and quality reviews across a range of engineering and technical documents. For advanced experience levels, review non-standard documents and scenarios, including licenses and legislative documents to maintain necessary qualifications.
- Resolve Technical Issues: Develop solutions to technical problems using established procedures and vendor documentation, covering areas such as Non-conformance Evaluations, Operability Determinations, and Quality Level determinations.
- Define Safety Boundaries: During HAZOP and design reviews, identify criticality and dosimetry safety boundaries and constraints.
- Apply Safety Practices: Adhere to industrial safety and radiological safety protocols in all field activities and engineering functions.
What You Need to Thrive in This Role
- Education:
- Essential: Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Process Technology, Nuclear Engineering, or a Professional Engineer (PE) license in relevant areas.
- Preferred: Master’s or PhD from an accredited institution, or additional advanced training.
- Skills and Knowledge:
- Proficiency in Computational Physics/Mathematics and complex systems modelling.
- Basic knowledge of Physics, specifically radioactivity.
- Engineering experience in process technology.
- Familiarity with Monte Carlo Computer Modelling (e.g., MCNP or MONK) is advantageous.
- Solid understanding of nuclear physics principles and criticality/dosimetry safety.
- Capability to model and simulate complex, integrated process systems for both stationary and dynamic scenarios, with a focus on criticality and radiological physics.
