Morson-sponsored Salford Racing team take part in annual Formula Student engineering competition

On the 19th July 2019, Salford University’ Formula Student (FS) team took part in the FS educational engineering competition. Backed by high-profile engineers, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more people to take up a career in the field.

Morson Group sponsors the Salford Racing Team and Morson Projects’ James Tetley and Gareth Clarke helped out by providing them with resources and equipment.

The competition, run by the UK’s Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), takes place at Silverstone and this year, the Salford Racing team came 77th, 62nd and 50th out of 130 teams from universities all over the world. The project usually forms part of a degree-level project and is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, effectively transitioning them from university to the workplace. It combines practical engineering experience with soft skills including business planning and project management.

This partnership comes alongside two initiatives that the University of Salford have teamed up with Morson on - the Morson Engine Room and the Morson Maker Space, each featuring the latest industry-standard manufacturing technologies with which to students to learn real-world engineering skills in relation to design for manufacture, assembly and inspection. The facilities aim to provide hands-on practical experience to be a step ahead of the average graduate.

Morson’s Gerry Mason Scholarships, now approaching their 5th year, also provide a selection of the brightest and best in engineering with the opportunities to study a range of courses at the University of Salford that they would have otherwise struggled to finance.
