Scottish Power Transmissions: Innovation and investment powering an exciting future
Contents
Scottish Power Transmission (SPT) is the regulated electricity network business operating across Central and Southern Scotland, as part of SP Energy Networks and the Iberdrola Group.
Their network comprises just over 4,000km of circuits and 150 substations that operate at 400kV, 275kV, 132kV and 33kV. Since 2013 they have invested around £2bn into the network, upgrading their assets and connecting 1500MW of new generation to continue to provide a safe and reliable electricity supply for their customers well into the future. Their transmission network keeps the power flowing to the distribution network which supplies electricity to over 2m people across Scotland and beyond.
Investing in the future
SPT is building towards a bright future, driving towards the goal of achieving Net Zero, as Transmission Programme Management Office Manager Jamie Reid explains:
“Over the next few years, the future will be just as exciting as we drive towards a Net Zero future through innovative and whole system solutions, whilst maintaining resilience and system operability in this critical transition, keeping our users and consumers at the heart of our plans and decisions. We plan to invest £1.8bn in our network from 2021, connecting at least a further 900MW of renewable energy, equivalent to a reduction of 1.6Mt per annum of CO2.”
Future expansion plans mean that there will be a continuous and wide range of opportunities and roles available within the business. These will be across Project Management, Construction and Engineering and other project support disciplines based at the conveniently located main office in Cambuslang, close to the main travel corridors of the M74 and M8, and at sites across the network. Opportunities exist for prospective contingency workers and employees, with the potential to transfer contract workers into permanent roles.
