Exciting MMA flyweight Lewis McGrillen on UFC dreams and previews his biggest fight to date
Lewis McGrillen is an exciting young Flyweight taking the UK MMA scene by storm, with his explosive knockout power and fan-friendly, all-action style.
The 22-year-old fights out of Manchester Top Team and has an impressive professional record of five wins, all first-round knockouts. Lewis returns to action this Saturday, 17th of December on Vida FC’s talent-filled card. We caught up with Morson’s first sponsored MMA fighter, to discuss how he discovered the rapid rising sport:
“One of my top friends he used to love MMA, but I didn’t really pay attention to it, I was more of a boxing guy. He gave me the UFC game to play, I played the game and I thought what is this? I went on YouTube and started watching Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, that was when Conor McGregor was up and coming”
He continued:
“I got hooked on that straight away and went to watch a UFC event. After that I just I fell in love with it. I started having a grapple and a mess around on the astro-turf doing the jiu-jitsu with some friends and became obsessed with sport. Since then MMA has really changed my life. It’s kept me on the straight and narrow. It given me a purpose and I feel like I’d be a lost soul without it. It’s given me a good future, a good path and a good mentality.“
Lewis will next be going up against experienced Portuguese fighter, Romero Miranda Rosario Dos Reis at Wythenshawe Forum. This is being billed as one of the last chances to see the Morson sponsored fighter on a small show, as many of the world’s top promotions have their eyes on signing him. Despite all the interest surrounding Lewis, he’s made it very clear that he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
“No rush. I’m still young. Obviously, I want to get to the UFC. But I’m not looking past Vinicius. I know he’s durable, he’s tough, he’s going to come to fight me and I’m ready for him. He’s going to have to take me out properly because I’m ready for war”
With an incredibly impressive highlight reel and a perfect knockout rate as a professional, McGrillen is looking to add another memorable finish to his collection:
“I always want to finish, that’s what I come to fight for. I want people on seats, I want to prove that I’m not just any ordinary flyweight fighter, I’m different and don’t get me wrong, it’s good to put on a clinic, but those first round finishes are what I always look for and what I want.”
We look forward to seeing Lewis’ career continue to accelerate and wish him the best of luck this Saturday!
