Morson sponsor the Sir Alex Ferguson Golf Classic 2022 - catch the highlights!
Thursday 9th June marked the long-awaited return of the Sir Alex Ferguson Golf Classic after a tough three years during through the pandemic.
The golf day saw many famous faces from the football world take part, with the likes of Bryan Robson, Sam Allardyce, and former Manchester United captain Michael Carrick representing teams consisting of various businesses from around the country, including Morson Group.
The purpose of the day was to raise vital funds for The Elizabeth Hardie Ferguson Charitable Trust, which was set up in Sir Alex’s mother’s name.
We spoke with Sir Alex about how great it was to host the event again and to catch up with old friends such as Michael Carrick and John O’Shea:
“The patience of everyone has brought us to this great day. It’s pretty cold, but it’s dry, I think we’ll enjoy it all too.”
He continued:
“They’re great professionals (Carrick and O’Shea) and it’s a pleasure to see them supporting the charity, which I really appreciate.”
He also discussed his fond memories with the club including the famous 2007/2008 side that won the Premier League and the Champions League that both Carrick and O’Shea featured in:
“It was a fantastic time obviously. 26 and a half years and with some great teams. But you know, I think that it was obviously the winning of the European Champions League, which was the Holy Grail for us and particularly the first one in Barcelona and then winning in Moscow. But we should have maybe won it more. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, we had some great teams and players and with some great times.”
Michael Carrick also told us who he believes were the worst golfers from Manchester United with a surprising answer from the former captain:
“The worst? I remember Rafa and Fabio, the twins picking up the golf clubs. It was one of the golf days actually, it was one of the first times they had played and they nearly killed someone! They nearly took someone’s head off!”
We spoke with former Bolton Wanderers manager, Sam Allardyce, who reminisced about his favourite memory of going head-to-head with Sir Alex in the Premier League:
“It was winning at Old Trafford 2-1 in our first season back in the Premier League in the 2000/2001 season, he probably won’t thank me for saying this! But Sir Alex is one of those people that, when we used to go and have a drink in the office after the game like we used to, he still welcomed you in. You accept the opposing manager and we all look after each other because we’re all in the same game.”
