About the Opportunity

We are currently recruiting a Fire Safety Engineer to join our Nuclear Power Engineering and Technical Services Business. In this role, you will work in both client-facing and internal positions, delivering major programme and project management capabilities throughout the project lifecycle. We are committed to delivering safe, high-quality, and on-time solutions through innovation and collaboration.

The successful candidate will be involved in the design, analysis, and assurance of fire safety systems, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and best practices. You will have the chance to develop your expertise in nuclear fire safety and work closely with regulatory bodies, engineering teams, and project managers.

You will play a key role in ensuring that fire safety measures are integrated into nuclear projects from their inception, through detailed design, construction, and into operation. Your work will have a direct impact on safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop fire safety design solutions, including evacuation plans, detection, suppression, alarms, compartmentalisation, and firefighting access.
  • Ensure designs align with industry best practices, policies, and procedures, incorporating operational experience and lessons learned.
  • Plan and execute fire protection system designs, ensuring timely and high-quality project deliverables.
  • Prepare and coordinate assessments and analysis across engineering, project management, and documentation functions.
  • Support nuclear safety case assurance throughout projects and programmes
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard evaluations to identify and mitigate potential fire safety risks.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to integrate fire safety solutions into broader engineering and design frameworks.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and development to junior engineers and adjacent disciplines.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with UK nuclear safety standards.
  • Stay up to date with emerging fire safety technologies, industry advancements, and regulatory changes to continuously improve best practices.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline.
  • Chartered, or working towards chartership with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE).
  • Experience in designing fire suppression, smoke control, fire barriers, alarms, and detection systems.
  • Knowledge of UK fire safety regulations (e.g., BS 9999 and BS 9990).
  • Understanding of UK nuclear site licensing, safety assessment principles, and regulatory guidance.
  • Experience interacting with regulators such as ONR or HSE.
  • Familiarity with fire modelling tools (e.g., CFAST or similar).
  • Proven team leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Experience in nuclear fire safety assessment, including both nuclear and conventional fire safety management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative fire safety solutions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex fire safety concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
