Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Our client Scottish Power Renewables are currently recruiting for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer on a contract basis based in Glasgow or London.

This role is initially until December 2025 but will be extended.

Main Purpose of Job
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is a critical role within the Offshore Renewables Business, focusing on the delivery of large-scale offshore wind projects.
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer role sits in the Ground Engineering Team within the Site Engineering Department and reports to the Ground Engineering Discipline Manager.
The successful candidate will support the ground engineering lead (GEL) during the pre-FID and construction phase for two of our UK offshore wind farms.
The company adopts an intelligent client business model for ground engineering services. This comprises a relatively small pool of company permanent staff with differing sub-disciplines (e.g. geotechnical design, geotechnical survey, engineering geology, geophysical survey etc.). Project is led by the GEL and supported by
external contractors and consultants. The role of Senior Geotechnical Engineering is to support the GEL on a project. The successful candidate will be required to use their technical excellence to identify and manage ground risk. With a strong technical background, they shall define scopes of work, support tendering, and manage survey contractors and specialist consultants.

Key Tasks
As the senior geotechnical engineer reporting into the GEL on a pre-FID and construction phase project, tasks will include:
• Supporting the GEL on the project in the management of ground engineering risks and activities.
• Supporting the scoping, tendering and managing of multi €m offshore site investigations to time, programme and budget.
• Supporting project ground engineering activities to continually identify, monitor and manage ground engineering risks.
• Support the GEL in identifying where consultancy support is required to manage ground risk. Define scopes of work, tender and manage ground engineering consultancy packages.
• Supporting and advise the relevant packages during foundations and cables design to ensure ground risk is appropriately managed.
• Supporting and advise the relevant packages during the foundations and cables installation to ensure ground risk is appropriately managed.
• Supporting and advise the relevant packages during the foundations and cables installation to ensure contractual and commercial risk is appropriately managed.
• Identifying and communicate ground risk to key stakeholders.
• Ensuring the project surveys meet the design and installation requirements of the project packages through continued stakeholder engagement and management.
• Supporting Ground Engineering components of the certification process in collaboration with relevant packages.
• Managing the tendering and development of the Ground Model and communicating the outputs, risks and recommendations to the project packages.
• Supporting may also be provided to Onshore Works teams on ground related aspects led by the Onshore works team.

Key Criteria
We are looking for individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and cultural awareness.
To be successful in this position you will need to demonstrate the majority of the following:
• Education to Degree level in relevant engineering discipline.
• Chartered or working towards chartered status with a relevant institution.
• Significant knowledge and experience of design and installation activities for an offshore wind farm.
• Comprehensive knowledge of offshore procedures, standards and guidelines.
• The ability to balance technical detail with commercial needs and provide recommendations, taking into account all relevant risks.
• Comprehensive knowledge of quality processes, and health, safety and environmental legislation associated with offshore/marine construction projects.
• Ability to communicate effectively and influence decision making with a diverse team of different expertise and experiences to achieve results.
• Excellent document writing skills in English, and excellent ability to communicate complex problems in a simple manner to a variety of backgrounds.
• Pro-active and diligent approach. Innovative and creative thinker. Problem solver.
• IT literate with the ability to effectively operate MS Office systems and the willingness to learn other IT based project management software.
• Problem solving – dealing with conflicting requirements.
• Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed in overcoming obstacles.

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

The following are desirable for the candidate to have:
• Knowledge and experience of planning, managing and executing offshore site investigations for large scale projects, including laboratory testing programmes.
• Knowledge of and experience of different types of geophysical surveys at different stages of offshore wind farm
• Experience with producing geotechnical ground models, including integration with geophysical data.
