Our client Scottish Power Renewables are currently recruiting for a Senior Telecom Engineer to join the team based in Glasgow.
This will be a contract role until initially Dec 2025 but likely to be project is approved until at least 2027.
Main Purpose of Job
The overall responsibilities for the role are to deliver the telecommunication, network, and SCADA infrastructure and services to large-scale offshore wind projects.
The job responsibilities include engineering and technical management of the telecommunication deliverables to the project; supervise specialised contractors and subcontractors works; develop, review, and approve technical documentation and perform the role of technical authority for the wider project, providing other project teams with telecommunication, networking, IT and OT expertise when required. The jobholder will be part of the System Integration team (work-package) and report to the Telecommunication Manager, however, is expected that the jobholder will also work in close collaboration with the corporate functions also involved in the delivery of the telecommunication scope of works (e.g. IT Systems, Cyber Security, etc).
The individual will be working as part of a global business with activities in many countries across Europe.
Key Tasks
• Support the strategy for the delivery of the telecommunication and IT assets across the offshore business.
• Provide professional advice on I.T. and telecommunication engineering strategies / risk levels and commercial agreements to the key package, to ensure that cost effective technical solutions are identified, fully evaluated and the risk profile is fully understood by the project.
• Liaise with diverse corporate functions to define and support the general division of responsibilities in the delivery of offshore assets.
• Reviewing and coordinating the requirements and interfaces of 3rd party IT and networking entities including Joint Venture partners, wind turbine networks, control networks and other offshore systems.
• Provide expert advice to the SI Package Manager relating to Wide Area Networks and Local Area Networks deployed as part of the project, potentially working within a number of countries throughout Europe and the USA, to ensure competencies are maintained (or enhanced).
• Support the project network IP addressing allocation.
• Supervising the integration of 3rd party networking assets in accordance with corporate policies and the SP network blueprint
• Liaise and coordinate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure delivery specifications are met, providing inputs on appropriate tender assessments.
• Contribute to the technical bid reviews and tender evaluations to recommend preferred bidders according to their technical capabilities.
• Technical management of tenders and contractors.
• Ensure all technical recommendations/advice is supported by due diligence to analyse new opportunities in the market.
• Contribute to the identification and management of technical risks, issues and impacts of the project to minimize dangers during construction, installation and operation of the wind farm structures.
• Provide assistance during inspection and commissioning of networking and telecommunication equipment of all offshore plant. Witness tests as required, both onshore and offshore to ensure that delivered equipment comply with design requirements.
• Carry out general project engineering duties with the IT and Networking team in the support of the business.
• Agree and support handover processes with Commissioning and O&M teams.
• Occasional travel to other Iberdrola offices, stakeholder meetings and wind farm sites throughout Europe.
Key Criteria
• Degree qualification or equivalent in Telecommunication Engineering or Computer Science with specialisation in networking.
• Experience in supporting development & construction phases of large-scale projects is desirable.
• Demonstrate ability to manage sub-contractors.
• Good knowledge of industry codes and standards and offshore regulations.
• Excellent knowledge of telecommunication infrastructure in general, structured cabling, networking, high-capacity transmission systems and radio communications.
• Good knowledge of Cisco portfolio.
• Ability to lead and own key project deliverables through to successful delivery.
• Ability to influence contractual / and or contractors operating with project.
• Experience in the design, configuration, and deployment of Local Area Networks.
• Experience of writing specifications.
• Knowledge of health and safety and environmental legislation associated with construction projects in UK and Europe.
• Knowledge of telecommunication system supporting SCADA infrastructure in wind farms.
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple work streams and deliver outcomes and goals to very tight deadlines.
• Ability to convey complex I.T. technical concepts and ideas to non-technical audience.
