We’re looking for an R&D Mechanical Engineering Manager, to be based at our Capenhurst site. You’ll act as mechanical Engineering expert and deal with the development of new processes (potentially involving challenging design conditions) requires specialised Mechanical Engineering capability. The Job Holder will therefore require excellent analytical skills, the ability and drive to build a network of niche engineering suppliers, an ability to work in a multi discipline team and an interest in working at the forefront of technology.

What you’ll do:
• Interacting with multiple stakehoders
• Oversee development of Mechanical Engineering capability to support R&D projects
• Ensure compliance with relevant regulations eg. Nuclear site licence conditions, COMAH, PSSR, LOLER. Demonstrate knowledge of engineering standards eg ASME B31.3, PD5500(or equivalents in the relevant jurisdiction).
• Develop network of Specialist Engineering Suppliers (relating to Mechanical Engineering) to expand internal discipline capability
• Lead the resolution of complex problems to optimise equipment mechanical engineering design for critical and/or novel plant equipment and systems
• Develop Urenco R&Ds approach to mechanical design and mechanical regulatory compliance
• Support the Project Delivery team to define and implement design and engineering initiatives that align with the development stage of R&D projects and ultimately support the efficient transfer of projects to the Group Projects
• Identifying and selecting experts and equipment manufacturers to provide Mechanical Eng input and develop Mechanical Eng designs.
• Preparing, reviewing, checking and approval of safety critical documentation
• Overseeing the development of designs for challenging operating conditions where standard design codes are difficult to apply. Assessing supplier capability for routine mechanical engineering activities as well as niche / novel input and applications. Understanding the role of other engineering and scientific disciplines and promote cooperative working to deliver optimal solutions
What do you need to thrive in this role?
• Chartered Mechanical Engineer with design, operating and ideally commissioning experience (anticipated minimum of 10 years)
• Degree or equivalent engineering qualification in Mechanical Engineering supported by minimum 10 years’ plus Mechanical Engineering Design experience.
• Minimum 10 years’ experience with a chemical/nuclear background.
• Broad exposure to working in a highly regulated environment on either a top tier COMAH or nuclear site
• Broad experience of mechanical technologies and equipment.
• Significant experience of multi-disciplined team working and the parts played by the various engineering disciplines
• Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style and content to suit audience.
• Ability to work with technical experts and plant operating teams across all levels of the organisation.
• Approach to work consistent with operating in a highly regulated environment.
• Extensive knowledge of design standards and change management procedures.
• Ability to prioritise workloads effectively to meet challenging targets.
• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant security, health, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
• Strong problem solving/trouble-shooting skills across the full engineering spectrum.
