Project Manager - Durham
We are seeking an experienced and driven Project Manager to oversee the day-to-day delivery of construction activities across a range of civil engineering projects. Our clients upcoming projects cover a variety of schemes, including high street public realm refurbishments, highways projects, bus station schemes, large 278 schemes, port refurbishments, and bridge deck refurbishments. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the successful delivery of civil engineering projects, typically valued at £5 million+.
- Manage project teams of 5+ staff, ensuring operational efficiency and high-quality execution.
- Lead and mentor engineers, site agents, and junior staff to foster development and progression.
- Maintain compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements, including NEC & JCT contracts.
- Work closely with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure project milestones are met.
- Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)
- Lead by example in promoting health, safety, and environmental best practices.
- Conduct inductions, toolbox talks (TBTs), and safety briefings.
- Develop, review, and approve Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS).
- Produce site construction phase plans and fulfill the role of Temporary Works Coordinator.
- Attend and contribute to monthly HSEQ meetings and internal working groups.
- Apply strong knowledge of basic engineering principles to project execution.
- Develop and manage project programmes, updates, and scheduling.
- Provide problem-solving expertise, identifying innovative solutions to project challenges.
- Prepare and manage technical queries and delegate work effectively.
- Develop and update project programmes, ensuring adherence to timelines.
- Deliver weekly and monthly progress reports and hold internal and client progress meetings.
- Assist in preparing monthly commercial reports and procurement schedules.
- Maintain accurate records of direct and subcontract works to support the commercial team.
- Support in variation and quotation production, ensuring commercial compliance.
- Appraise and manage subcontractors, identifying risks and opportunities within projects.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001 standards.
- Conduct internal project audits and implement quality control measures.
- Recognize and rectify defective works promptly to maintain high-quality standards.
- Compile and manage documentation for Health & Safety files and handover processes.
Experience & Qualifications
- HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in civil engineering project delivery.
- CSCS Gold card (minimum) and 5-day SMSTS certification.
- UK driving license (clean or minimal points).
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and project planning software.
- Experience managing teams of 5 or more staff on projects.
- First Aid at Work certification.
- Basic experience in leadership training.
