This week’s Spring Statement was keenly anticipated by businesses of all sizes and sectors as we look ahead to the next financial year at a time of global change and uncertainty.

Spring statement

There has been the usual criticism and controversy from all shades of the political spectrum, but also some positive announcements for both key sectors served by Morson Group, and a topic close to our heart; skills and future talent.

Homegrown Innovation

At Morson, we’ve been very clear about the need to secure future talent pipelines by inspiring the next generation of engineers and professionals and leveraging the potential of transferable skills. This message was echoed very clearly by the chancellor as she mapped out the UK’s ambition to become a defence industry ‘superpower’, driving innovation with new technology and investment.

Across the contractors, permanent roles, and consultancy services we provide to engineering projects, aviation businesses, infrastructure and the digital supply chain, we are already supporting homegrown innovation, with engineers from Morson Projects working on groundbreaking projects. With our engineering businesses’ industry-leading Early Careers Development Programme (ECDP), we are growing a sustainable talent pipeline of gifted and ambitious engineers that will enable us to resource future initiatives as technology develops and the UK continues to drive innovation.

Transformation

Another key theme of the Spring Statement was the need for transformation in public services and state structures to reduce layers of cost and red tape and make Britain fit for the future in a rapidly changing world.

As a company that has already become an early adopter of AI with our Palantir system, we completely understand the power of new technology to streamline and enhance human talent and resources.  When the chancellor spoke of transformation, the goals she was laying out were about delivering improved value and efficiency, but much of the implementation she was announcing was about digital transformation.

At Morson, we provide talented people, recruitment expertise, and HR services to clients who are transforming their commercial potential with digital transformation projects. Our recruiters are specialists who understand the fast pace of emerging technologies and the positive potential of AI, enabling us to place the right expertise into roles that have never been filled before.

Training and Future Talent

The Spring Statement also reiterated the government’s agenda for supporting people back into the workplace and tackling skills gaps in key industries, such as construction.

At Morson, we’re also taking steps to support people into the careers that will give them a rewarding and successful future. Our Pathfinders Academy allows us to work collaboratively with organisations to assess their critical skills gaps and create bespoke training programmes that equip candidates with the technical expertise required. This innovative programme supports businesses and enables individuals to leverage their transferable skills and learn new ones at all levels.

Meanwhile, we’re looking ahead to tackle the skills gaps of tomorrow by supporting programmes that engage young people from primary school through to postgraduate level. From our involvement with Into University and Primary Engineer, through to our sponsorship of the Morson Maker Space at the University of Salford and the Gerry Mason Engineering Scholarships, our STEM Foundation is a catalyst for inspiring, nurturing, and developing the engineering and digital talent of the future.

Making Change Deliverable

The chancellor repeatedly referred to the changing world in her Spring Statement, and it is clear that there is an urgent need not just to respond to change, but to anticipate and embrace it. That’s what we have always done at Morson, and, amidst the challenges of uncertain times, we are keenly focused, as we have always been, on supporting our clients across critical industries in making positive change deliverables.
